Gap lists

The Biodiversity Genomics Europe (BGE) initiative aims to improve biodiversity research in Europe. An important part of the BIOSCAN project, which is part of BGE, is to identify and fill the existing gaps in the barcoding databases.

Here we present an up-to-date list of all animal species that occur in Europe according to the lists used. Together with the names and their systematic classification, we show to what extent they are already represented with sufficient sequences in the sequence database BOLD.

FAQ

The lists contain all (animal) species that occur in Europe (according to the project area).

The names in the list correspond to the currently valid species names if they are validated. sometimes sequences are listed under an outdated name at BOLD. the more the list was checked by experts, the more species have more than one link, because sometimes sequences of the same species are deposited on BOLD under a different spelling or an old name.

For all species in which there is an abbreviation in this column, the abbreviations have been checked either by another database or by an expert. A current list of databases and experts can be found here

Above the table, there is a search function that automatically filters for certain search terms. Basically, all columns are taken into account, so that, for example, the search term Api recognizes both the family APIdae and species such as Aleiodes APIcalis as hits.

The full lists and filtered subsets can be downloaded in Excel format and in csv format (comma separated values). By clicking on the icon next to the query field, all the data filtered at that moment will be downloaded in the specified format

The column 'source' explains from which databases the species originate. If more than one database is named, it means that these species are present in the named sources. however, it may be that the names of the species differ in the databases. A list of the data sources and the corresponding abbreviations can be found here.
